A year after taking the first steps to end Pennsylvania’s “shameful distinction” as one of only two states that did not pay for public defenders, Gov. Josh Shapiro and state lawmakers said Monday they would negotiate to make more money available for indigent defense.
Gov. Josh Shapiro said he wants to invest in the people of Pennsylvania with a $48.3 billion budget that directs new funding to education, economic growth, and creating better opportunities for residents.
Earlier this year, Governor Tom Wolf unveiled his proposed education budget, which comes amid school systems entering a ”breaking point“ due to staffing shortages and lower-than-expected Keystone exam results.
